Why self-host Immich?

AI face & object recognition

Immich automatically groups photos by person using face recognition, and lets you search your library by objects — "beach", "dog", "birthday" — without manual tagging. ML features need 4+ GB RAM to run comfortably.

Automatic mobile backup

iOS and Android apps back up photos and videos in the background over Wi-Fi. Every new photo on your phone appears in Immich automatically — no manual uploads or transfers.

Map view & shared albums

Photos with GPS metadata appear on an interactive map. Share albums with family and friends — they get access to specific albums, not your entire library.

Plan storage for video

Photos average 3–5 MB each but 4K videos average 3–5 GB per minute. Budget storage generously. Unlimited bandwidth means large uploads and downloads never cost extra.

Frequently asked questions

What are the minimum specs for Immich?

Immich requires at least 2 cores and 4 GB RAM. The machine learning features (face recognition, object detection) are the most demanding — 4 GB RAM is the minimum, 8 GB is recommended for a smooth experience. Storage depends on your library size.

Does Immich have mobile apps?

Yes. Immich has official iOS and Android apps that support automatic background backup. Photos and videos are uploaded over Wi-Fi automatically — you can also trigger manual uploads.

Can I share albums with people who don't have an account?

Yes. Immich supports public share links for albums and individual assets. Recipients can view shared content in a browser without creating an account.

How much storage do I need?

Budget approximately 3–5 MB per photo at full resolution. 10,000 photos ≈ 30–50 GB. Videos are much larger — a 1-minute 4K video is typically 3–5 GB. Start with generous storage and expand as your library grows.

Is Immich free?

Yes. Immich is fully open-source and free. There is no paid tier, no per-user fee, and no feature restrictions. You pay only for the server it runs on.

Immich is a self-hosted photo and video management platform with a full mobile experience. iOS and Android apps back up photos and videos automatically in the background — no manual transfers. AI-powered face recognition groups photos by person, and object detection lets you search for "beach", "dog", or "birthday cake" across your entire library. The map view places every photo on a world map based on GPS metadata. Shared albums let you collaborate with family and friends without sharing access to your whole library. Immich is written in TypeScript and runs as a Docker stack — a PostgreSQL database, Redis cache, and ML worker handle face recognition and object detection. The ML features require 4+ GB RAM. Storage is the main cost driver: plan for at least 2–3 GB per 1,000 photos at full resolution, plus video files which are significantly larger.
